Dame Alice Harrison

Alice Harrison was born in Fulwood near Preston in 1680 to Protestant parents. Despite their objections she converted to catholicism having been inspired by a local priest. Harrison was encouraged to start a school and did so in Fernyhalgh. A number of the pupils went on to become leading catholics.

Dame Alice died in Garswood in 1765, having been looked after in here retirement by the Gerard family. A plaque in memorium to Dame Alice is located within the Chantry tower she is described as,

"ONE WHO DID GREAT THINGS FOR GOD AND HIS CHURCH"
